About the Cajun Hot Soles

The Cajun Hot Soles will take you back to the sweat-stained Louisiana dancehalls of the 1950's and earlier - horses and Model T's parked outside, beer and gumbo inside, but most importantly, a crowded dance floor swaying to accordions and fiddles playing rhythmic Cajun two-steps and waltzes, with singers telling stories of happiness and heartache.

The Cajun Hot Soles are based in the Minneapolis, Minnesota area, and have performed frequently and steadily since inception in 1998. The band members have decades of both Cajun and non-Cajun musical experience. They have made - and continue to make - trips to Louisiana to study with master Cajun musicians and have played as the backing band for visiting Louisiana Cajun musicians.

Meet the Cajun Hot Soles

Kurt Olson co-founded the Cajun Hot Soles in 1998, along with Eric, and has been our El Capitain ever since, leading the songs on accordion and sometimes adding triangle and rub-board to the sound. Kurt has booked the band, created our set lists and kept us all together over the years.
Mary DuShane and her fiddle joined the Hot Soles around Mardi Gras in 2007 and made the first pilgrimage to Louisiana in 2010 . Mary’s performance and recording history goes back to the original Powdermilk Biscuit Band on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion and includes a decade with the Buffalo Gals, besides square dance, contra dance and jug bands, plus teaching fiddle.
John Terr’s passion for Cajun music goes back many years. He learned the music in Louisiana and Chicago, honing his skills with the Chicago Cajun Aces before moving to Minnesota in 2001. John has taught Cajun guitar nationally and is also a strong accordion player and singer. He is in demand with several regional bands.
Eric Paulson, also an original co-founder of the Hot Soles, traveled to Louisiana several times with Kurt when they first fell in love with Cajun music. Eric started on fiddle with the band and then switched to electric and acoustic bass, which he also plays with country bands, currently the Twin City Playboys and Jennifer Markey.
Bill began playing with the Hot Soles regularly in the summer of 2008. He loves how the steel guitar fits into Cajun music and how the band members freely interplay musically with one another. Bill also finds that the dancers are as much a part of the music as the band in creating the joyous spirit of Cajun dances!
Page Burkum, our youngest band member, is a great lover of vintage music. Currently playing drums for Javier and the Innocent Sons (blues), Glen Hanson (country), and the House of Mercy band (gospel) besides the Hot Soles, Page is featured playing guitar and singing duets with his brother Jack in Cactus Blossoms - a classic "brothers sound" country band.
